We may be heading into winter but pupils at Clutton Church of England Primary School had their sights set on spring as they planted daffodils on the village green in Clutton. The event was organised by local councillor Peter Mitchell alongside Cheshire West and Chester’s Street Care team.

Equipped with high visibility jackets, the children were escorted to the village green to plant the bulbs by year 3/4 class teacher Mrs Linzi Georgeson, teaching assistant Mrs Christine Rose, parent helpers and interim principal of Clutton C of E Primary School Mrs Julie Boyes. Known locally as The Green, this is the junction of Holywell Lane and Broxton Road, minutes from Clutton Primary School’s location on Broxton Road.

The planting was part of a borough wide scheme funded by local ward members, as part of Cheshire West and Chester’s Love Your Streets campaign. Pupils planted the bulbs with the assistance of two Your Streets SMART officers, Karl and Tom.

Local parish councillor Peter Mitchell said: “It was so good to see all these young future gardeners tackle the planting with such enthusiasm, enjoyment and speed. They planted 500 bulbs in less than half an hour! It will be wonderful for them and Clutton residents to see The Green covered in glorious yellow daffodils in the spring.”

Clutton C of E Primary School has a long association with the community, with a shared multi use games area (MUGA) on the primary school site that is available to residents most evenings, weekends and holidays. Teacher Mrs Georgeson said the children were delighted to get involved with the planting:

“Connecting with nature and being outdoors is so important for children. We have a wonderful outside space at Clutton, with a forest school area for our weekly forest school sessions, the MUGA, trim trail and a large grassed field that the children love to play on. Pupils might also get involved with gardening at our Kingfishers before and after school club, so we knew they would enjoy planting the bulbs on The Green. We can’t wait to come back in the spring to see how they look.”

The bulb planting is the first in a series of community events that are being planned for the community. Peter Mitchell reports that the local parish council would welcome the involvement of Clutton residents.

“We are one councillor down in Clutton, and are always looking for new people to come on board and drive new initiatives to improve our village further.”
